Lewes MP Norman Baker has always been supportive of the Vale of Sussex Society and says: "I welcome this relaunch for the Vale of Sussex Society, and strongly endorse its aims and vision. With continuing pressure for development, and the erosion of the traditional countryside, it is vital we take action to defend the character of villages in my constituency such as Chailey, Wivelsfield and Plumpton and the countryside that surrounds them. That means no alien off-the-peg housing developments, proper maintenance for our footpaths and bridleways, and no 'improvements' to our lanes by means of urban kerbs or a plethora of road signs.
"I look forward to working with the Vale of Sussex Society". Norman Baker, MP for Lewes
In a recent meeting, Lewes District Councillor Sharon Davy supported the Vale of Sussex Society's aims and objectives: "Around 74,000 people live outside the National Park, and only around 22,169 are included within it. It is imperative that the National Park does not produce a 'them and us' scenario within the Lewes District. After all: the whole of our beautiful Sussex countryside is precious and demands protection from inappropriate urbanisation. and over-development".
Sharon Davy, Chailey & Wivelsfield Ward.
The Vale of Sussex Society has recently been awarded a grant from the South Downs Sustainability Fund to produce a booklet containing walks, horse and cycle rides to and in and around the villages of the Eastern section of the SDNP. Written by local writer and Society member, Mary Parker, also included will be details of accommodation, food outlets, public transport, shops, and historical and cultural local attractions. The aim of producing such a Guide is to show visitors and residents how to access the SDNP from its gateway villages thus promoting green tourism and the sustainability of rural communities. If you would like any information about how you can contribute to the Guide please contact the Society on info@valeofsussexsociety.org
