Vision Statement

Welcome to the Vale of Sussex Society. We were founded in 2004 and re-launched as a subscription based campaigning organisation in the autumn of 2009.

The Vale of Sussex is a name that for decades has been given to the rolling lands that lie between the South Downs and the High Weald. They contain many areas of outstanding natural beauty and many features of historic and scientific interest. Indeed, much of the unique beauty of the South Downs themselves derives from the unspoilt views north across the Vale with its fields, woods, meadows and streams. The essential character of both the Downs and the Vale must be preserved and protected.

The Society's mission is to make sure that the voices of local people concerned to preserve the rural character of the Vale are heard loudly, clearly and in good time in the corridors of power, nationally and locally.

The overall purpose of the relaunched Vale of Sussex Society will be to work to ensure that all can continue to enjoy the outstanding landscape and cultural heritage of the Vale. We are committed to campaigning against creeping suburbanisation and inappropriate housing, traffic engineering and road development within the Vale. Our campaigns will focus on supporting sustainable development within the Vale, provided that it does not degrade the countryside. We will campaign to conserve our rural roads and lanes and to develop and extend the existing network of footpaths and bridleways to make them safer for all users.
